Can the illness, tetanus, be contracted by eating foods that is contaminated by Clostridium tetani spores?
Mainly it is caused by skin infection due to puncture wounds from sharp outdoor surface that is dirty.
Spores, contrary to vegetative cells, are more resistant and might pass through the stomach acid without getting killed. I’m wondering whether it can grow in the intestines (since it is an anaerobe), so that the toxin gets absorbed into the blood stream?? What about immuno-compromised patients?
Clostridium tetani is thought to be a transient member of the intestinal flora whose presence depends upon ingestion. The bacterium has a strictly anaerobic type of metabolism and will not grow under aerobic conditions. In fact, vegetative cells are killed by exposure to O2, although their spores are able to survive long periods of exposure to air and other deleterious conditions. Their endospores may survive the gastric acid. yes! it is possible that you could contract the disease by eating foods contaminated with endospores. But it needs a large number of endospores for them to cause an infection, unlike in a punctured wound.
