Is it possible to have X10 wall switches trigger other events or modules?
I am planning on setting up an X10 system probably using misterhouse on linux. Anyways, I was wondering if it was possible to have a switch like this: http://www.smarthome.com/2031W/X10-In-Wall-Light-Switch-White-WS467-W-PLW01-W-/p.aspx
trigger another event or appliance/light. You know, like when I turn on the living room lights sense that and this could be picked up by my computer which could trigger other events. If not is there any way to do this using something else?
First of all that’s a two wire switch. If the switch that gets replaced has three wires (copper ground) – get a three wire X10 switch – far more reliable.
Now to your question.
Several ways to accomplish your goal.
The simplest is to set several receiving modules to the same code. Each X10 module is capable of being set to 256 individual codes. If you have three modules all set to the same code – such as ‘A1’ – turning on ‘A1’ accomplishes your goal of multiple events happening from one trigger.
Next there are remotes capable of “macros”. Pressing a single button sends out several codes – such as A1 , A2 and B4. These remotes start in the $100 range but require learning the software to program. I have a Phillips pronto that controls my home theater with macros and love it.
Lastly there are X10 switches and modules capable of two way communication. These are intended to talk to a computer and typically used for timed events. These modules let the computer know if they are on or off. This is a very complicated installation and should not be attempted by a novice.
